Induction

Charges exert a force on other charges. Thereby opposite charges attract each other whereas likely charges repel one another.
The special thing about this is that they do not have to touch each other to exert the force, the force acts remotely.

This can be shown most suitably in an experiment:

Kugeln und Ladungen

  1. Two metal balls are installed seperately on isolated tripods. Both of them are not charged, which means that the distribution of their positive and negative charges is in balance.

  2. Near them a third ball is installed. This one is charged extremly positively because it only has got few negative charges (electrons).
Furthermore the orange and green balls are connected with a wire.

  3. Finally the wire and the third ball are removed.

Think about the influence of that on the charges of the two balls.
