A rainbow is visible when you look at the waterdrops from the direction of the light source. The waterdrops more or less reflect the light back into the direction where it comes from. When looking at a natural rainbow, the sun is behind your back.

What will happen if you move in relation to the rainbow?
Think about the answer before trying it out for yourself. Move alongside the rainbow and towards the rainbow and observe its position. If necessary, get help and have somebody hold the garden hose or the spray bottle.

a) During the movement, the rainbow is barely visible. You can only see it while standing still.

b) The rainbow does not change. No matter from which point you look at it, it stays in the same place.

c) As you move, the rainbow moves along with you. It seems as if it follows you.
