If we put an additional light mass of foam between wall and sphere the sphere would "feel" a slightly greater attractional force - and this is the contrary of what we want to achieve.

Right answer: Do attractional forces of the same size act on the sphere on its left as well as on its right side, the sum of both forces equals zero. The sphere in fact does not "feel" an horizontal attractional force anymore.
