If we put an additional mass between wall and sphere the sphere would "feel" an even greater attractional force. We cannot block off the gravitational force with the help of metals.

Right answer: Do attractional forces of the same size act on the sphere on its left as well as on its right side, the sum of both forces equals zero. The sphere in fact does not "feel" an horizontal attractional force anymore.
