The riddle of the pirate
What happens with the sea level, if the captain throws the gold coin overboard? Consider well before you answer.
-
a) The sea level will rise because the sinking coin displaces water. This was found out by Archimedes.
b) The sea level will sink because the coin pushes the pirates' ship in the water and the ship displaces more water. If the coin is thrown overboard, the ship will rise a bit. All in all, less water is displaced.
c) The sea level will not change because the coin on the ship displaces the same amount of water like the sinking coin. Its magnitude did not change.
d) The sea level will not change because the buoyant force of the coin remains the same. It does not matter if it is on the boat or in the sea. .
