Indeed, Charles du Fay's experiments only allowed the interpretation that there are two types of electricity. Charles du Fay found out that electrified bodies can have two states. Bodies which are electrified in the same way repel one another. But if bodies are electrified differently, they attract each other.
Furthermore he found out, that different electifications can cancel each other out. If you bring two oppositely electrified bodies together, their occurences will cancel each other out and they will become neutral.

But it still took several decades until the first researcher came up with the dazzling idea to explain these phenomena actually.
