William Gilbert

Because of his series of experiments, William Gilbert found out that electricity is a phenomenon itself. The electric attraction acts according to different laws from magnetism.

Due to his research Gilbert is rated as the founder of electrical science. With the help of surveyors' arrows he examined the electric and the magnetic attraction. Thereby he also disproved many legends - for instance that garlic could demagnetise a magnet.

Because of Gilbert, the work with electricity became modern, but he also could not explain the reason for the attraction.
