Earth's magnetic field

The Earth has a magnetic field, too. Because it surrounds the whole planet, it can be used for orientation with the help of a compass. The magnetic north pole, however, is close to the geographic south pole, and the magnetic south pole is close the geographic north pole.

The formation of the magnetic field of the Earth is very complicated. We do know, however, that it is caused by liquid flowing iron on the interior of the earth.
