There is no such thing as a magnetic link between two objects. The magnetic force is only caused by material properties.

Iron can be magnetised so that it behaves like a magnet. To do so, a magnet has to interact with the piece of iron in the same way over and over again. Afterwards, it can attract other pieces of iron on its own. You can try this yourself, for instance, with a paperclip.

To understand how the iron changes, it is helpful to answer the following question first:

Why do a magnet and iron attract each other in the first place?
