“Blimey! The magnet fell down and broke. What a pity!“

“Yes, a real pity! It broke exactly in halves. But maybe we can learn something out of it. Let's take a look at how the two pieces behave now!“

“Interesting, there are still paperclips adhering to the magnet. So it's not broken after all because it's still magnetic.“

“The two halves of the magnet attract each other. Look, the left half is completely green, the other one completely red. Do you think we have an individual south pole and an individual north pole?“

“I'm not sure whether there are magnets with single poles. Is this even possible?“

a) One piece is an individual south pole, the other one an individual north pole and therefore they are coloured entirely red and green respectively. This is the reason why they attract each other.

b) Elementary magnets consist of two poles. Now matter how often the magnet is split, it will always have two poles, because there are elementary magnets inside.
